Frelling Yotz! A language essay.

OK, everyone knows what the Earthy equivalents to "frell" and "hezmana" are, right? Good.

Now, it has come to my attention that ex-Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun has been substituting "frell" for "hezmana" on some occaisions. It has also occured to me that this might just be a flub up on the part of the writers. But now that I think about it, I believe there's a deeper purpose.

It was revealed in The Flax that Sebaceans believe that "when you die, you die. You go nowhere and see nothing." And therefore, they would have no comprehension of an afterlife, therefore, no Hezmana. And if Aeryn has no concepts of that word, unlike John and presumably D'Argo, etc., then she couldn't use it in a conversation naturally.

I think that Sebaceans adopted the "frell" curse word to be a sort of multi-purpose curse, much like Rygel's "yotz". So for Aeryn, "frell" means everything from "dren" to "hezmana", and still maintains the meaning of "frell" as used in other cultures. However, since Aeryn does know what "dren" would be, she can use that word, so she does. Now, "yotz" is, from what I can tell, a multipurpose Hynerian cuss. Rygel uses it for nearly everything.

In conclusion, I believe that the writers of Farscape are thinking much more complex than I was (as usual), and realized that Aeryn would not have any concept of "Hezmana" if Sebaceans didn't believe in it, and if Sebaceans didn't believe in it, then using that word wouldn't matter to them (in the same sense that "frell" and "dren" to). I will try not to doubt the writers in the future.

Now that just leaves the mivonks problem...
