What We Know: Velorek was first introduced in The Way We Weren't, through Aeryn's
flashbacks. Aeryn's last line about Velorek's fate is, "They never got him to talk." Crais's plan
was to impregnate a Leviathan and breed a PK-Leviathan gunship. Velorek knew about the
plan, and stopped it by installing the conception shield (heretofore known as CS). D'Argo, way
back in They've Got A Secret, shattered that shield and indirectly impregnated Moya. Talyn
was born due to that. Therefore we KNOW that the writers had enough forsight to anticipate a
TWWW sometime in the future when they wrote TGAS.
What I Believe: Velorek was a highly specialized Peacekeeper scientist. He was the local
expert on Pilot-things and Leviathans. Velorek knew exactly what to do to calm Pilot down,
knew exactly what Pilot would feel when he woke Moya up, he even seemed to understand--
not speak, just understand--some of Pilot's native language. I don't think there could be that
many Peacekeepers--let alone Sebaceans--that have such knowledge regarding Pilot-things
and Leviathans.
Aeryn's last line regarding Velorek was pretty vague, huh? "They never got him to talk." That
merely implies a torturous death. But when, in any kind of military, have you seen the superior
officers sharing important information with PROWLER PILOTS? That's all Aeryn was, to them:
A low-ranking prowler pilot. They probably had much more important things to do than tell
classified things to a prowler pilot. Anyway, I think Aeryn just assumed they killed Velorek
because he never told them what he did (the shield was still installed, after all). *I* think
Velorek was too important to them to kill. If you had just one guy who knew practically
everything about Pilot-things and Leviathans and the like, you'd want to keep him around,
wouldn't you? They probably locked Velorek up, sure, but I highly doubt they killed him.
An Interesting Twist Of Fate: Now, suppose Velorek found out Moya had a baby, and that his
shield failed. Upon hearing that, Velorek might have told them everything he did, and been
reinstated, at a somewhat lower rank, and a different job. Now, suppose he was told to
appoint to Special Operations. I AM getting somewhere with this, trust me. Just suppose he
now works at Special Ops, maybe with a new name (because everyone knows Velorek died
under torture...). Now, and this is the big one, suppose Velorek's next assignment included
some kind of infiltration job, and suppose the only person equipped for such a job would be a
particular lady named Jenavian Chatto. Would that NOT BE INTERESTING if Velorek and
Jenavian, working together, managed to run into Crichton and Aeryn?
Aeryn and Gilina: After reading a lot of the PK Tech Girl transcripts for Chainmale Trivia, I
noticed that Aeryn seemed to have a great deal of direspect for Gilina. Why was this? I think
one of them said it was because she (Gilina) was a Tech. Now, what if Aeryn's disastrous
relationship with a scientist--Velorek--caused her to inwardly resent her own feelings about the
betrayal and stuff, and outwardly resent any other technological personnel? I think that's a high
probility. It would surely add more depth to Aeryn's personality, wouldn't it?
