from Kaete:

Why would the information on Crais's little chip make Aeryn "the happiest soul among us?" Inquiring minds want to know. There are a lot of different speculations on the board, so I decided to list some together. (With additional comments by me, of course!) There are ten predictions listed here. Which one do you think is most likely?

***1. The chip contains information about Aeryn's mother (name? I'll just call her Mom) and father, Talyn.***

It is possible. The writers seem fond of "find the family" plots. For example, D'argo and son, Chiana and brother, John and family on Earth, Stark and his whole race, etc. However, due to the harsh life of PK's, I suspect Aeryn's parents are dead by now. Say, has anyone ever seen an old PK? Maybe they're forcibly "retired."

***2. The chip contains info on an unknown sibling.***

Mmmmmm. Excuse me while I fantasize about what a hunk Aeryn's brother would be..... ~Ahem~. Alternatively, we might find out that the new actress rumored to be joining the show is her sister. Less than likely, since Chiana already has the missing sibling angle covered. Sigh.

***3. Inspired by the Scorpy brain chip, Crais has invented the "Aeryn chip."***

Yay! Now we all get to have an Aeryn clone running around in our heads. Buy one now! Only $99,999.99! (Rygel set the price. Greedy little pirate. But ask yourself, friends, can you truly put a price on the ability to see the Raven-haired Goddes 24 hours a day?) After I twisted Rygel's eyebrow, he finally admitted that for his long and loyal service, UCSBDad can have one free of charge. :)

***4.The chip is a trap set for Crais by Scopius.***

Scorpius seems pretty confident that Crais will be taken care of, so the chip might just be a plan that Scopy has already set in motion.

***5. The Chip says that Crais is Aeryn's father.***

Highly unlikely. First of all, I don't see how this info would make Aeryn happy at all. Second, we know that her father's name was Talyn (though names can be changed). Also, Crais doesn't look old enough to be Sun's dad, though that could just be a matter of his alien biology. Lastly, that would make all the sexual innuendo really disturbing. It would, however, explain his screaming at her death and the need for revenge. Also it has been pointed out that the lustful looks could have been searching her for characteristics of her mothers. Still totally freaky.

Happy bonus to this idea-- Lani has already shown a great talent for famous SciFi lines. (see CDM, when Pilot does a dead on HAL impression) Imagine hearing Crais say "Aeryn, I am your father!" Cut to Aeryn screaming, "Noooo!"

***6. The Chip says Crais is Aeryn's brother.***

Slightly more likely. This would explain Crais's rush to revenge her death. We've already seen him lose his high place in PK ranks trying to get revenge for his brother. Crais mentions that unlike most PK's he was raised by loving parents, until eventually he was taken away from them. Aeryn has said that though she didn't know her parents, her mother loved her enough to search for Aeryn (probably at the risk of Mom's life for breaking PK rules). Sadly Mom only had enough time to tell Aeryn the name of her father and that she was a child born of love, not duty.

Perhaps Crais, Tuavo, and Aeryn were all children of Mom and Papa Talyn, who secretly raised their kids rather than give them up to the system. Unfortunately, they were found out only a year or two after a daughter was born. Papa Talyn and Mom are reassigned to different sectors; the kids are split up. The two brothers are old enough to remember their family and find each other. The daughter, however, was too young to remember, so she was assigned a new name, "Aeryn Sun." The girl adapts quickly, and grows up to become the Raven-haired Goddess that we know and love. Crais and Tuavo grow up and lose hope of ever finding their sister. Then Tuavo is killed by an unknown alien, causing Crais to believe that his family is gone forever, and making him go a tad bit ~crazy~. Then one day he learns that a certain gunship has been named Talyn, the name of his father. So he does a little researching and... Surprise, surprise! Aeryn is the long lost little sis!

This has some interesting implications. For example, maybe Talyn (the ship) was willing to go with Crais because he was so genetically similar to Aeryn. Also, how would Crais feel knowing John almost killed his ~other~ sibling too?

Major problem is still the sexual factor. Weird. Creepy. Strangely believable for Farscape.

***7. The chip contains info on Aeryn's baby.***

Lowly PK's can't keep their children, so obviously if Aeryn had one she would have to give it up. Scapers speculate that the father of her baby could be Crais, Velorak, or some other PK she "recreated" with. I think this is unlikely for two reasons. One, since the PK's approve of soldiers recreating, then they would most likely prescribe a fool-proof prevention pill for all women but breeders. Second, I think that when D'argo revealed that he had a son to Aeryn, (season one) she would have confided that she had a child too. Then again, perhaps at that point in the series she wasn't ready to reveal so much about herself, but understood D'argo's pain because she was also a parent.

Some Scapers have wondered how Aeryn having a child would affect her relationship with John. It's been pointed out that men can have a problem with dating a woman who has children. I've got to remind you, John is a daddy too. It may be 80 years before the Princess Katralla(?) statue thaws out and has his child, but she will. Besides, knowing John, as soon as he got over the shock he would ~adore~ any child of Aeryn's. (Ooh, the idea of Chrichton spoiling a tiny daughter of Aeryn just warms the cockles of my little shipper heart)

***9. The chip reveals that ship Talyn is Papa Talyn.***

Perhaps they put a PK mind in the gunship, since the peaceful Leviathans make terrible soldiers. Through a twist of fate, they chose Aeryn's father. Of course, the mind would have been initially cleansed of memories, but a great affection for Aeryn would remain. Then Crais helped him regain his memories.

***10. The chip reveals that Talyn is Aeryn's baby!***

No, really, that's not a typo. Yes, I mean Talyn the ship. Is that the sound of the audience laughing that I hear? Listen now, disbelievers, and be amazed!

In TWWW, Aeryn is on Moya while Crais and Velorak are experimenting on the Leviathan. Presumably, at this point they also install whatever will eventually make Moya pregnant. They tinkered with genetics to get a Leviathan with guns. It is also possible that they added a tiny bit of PK genes in the mix. Why would they add PK genes? Annoyed by the lack of cooperation from the Pilot species, and generally xenophobic anyway, the PK's wanted the new ship to interface more easily with Sebaceans. Then they wouldn't have to rely on the Pilots. Unless you have a giant multi-tasking mind (like Pilot), understanding Leviathans is simply impossible. The PK's needed to give the gunship a more Sebecean-like mind, so that the Sebecean PK's could understand it --- which meant adding in a hint of PK genes. If you noticed, Talyn finds it easier to verbalize, while Moya mostly communicates in emotions.

During this time, Aeryn became involved with Velorak, who was working in the Leviathan projects. Velorak was much more sentimental than is normal for a PK. Could it be that, inspired by his love for her, (and the knowledge that she was the best pilot in the force) Velorak choose to use Aeryn's genes? Since PK's probably have regular medical check-ups, it would be easy for him to obtain a DNA sample. Aeryn never even knew. Possibly he planned for Aeryn to be pilot the new gunship when it was born. He kept hinting that she could be so much more than a low ranking grunt. But he sensed that Aeryn was frightened of the intimate relationship, so he installed the shield to prevent Moya from having the baby until he could convince Aeryn. Also, since shield would make Crais's efforts to impregnate the Leviathan fail, it would cause him to lose power over the program. Then Velorak would be free to control the new gunship. Having Aeryn as both pilot and lover, since she was a great pilot and genetically related to the ship, would only further cement his power over the Gunship. Thus Velorak had both sentimental reasons and ambition driving him to use Aeryn's genes.

This would cause the great affection that gunship Talyn feels for her, as well as Aeryn's strong maternal feelings for Talyn. Even though she was never "metal arm of friendship" bonded to the ship, Aeryn was able to communicate with him. And in one way Talyn is like his co-mother; they certainly both tend to run away from loving relationships! The relationship would be the reason Talyn so wanted Aeryn to come with him. And it explains Talyn's eagerness to kill Scopius. After all, he'd hurt one of Talyn's mommas! And here's a nice thought --- if this were true then Talyn would be named after his grandfather.

Hey Chrichton, how's Talyn for an unruly stepson? ; )

from 30d954A:

Ok, so there I was, watching Family Ties for the first time in over a year (I now firmly believe that Family Ties is THE BEST Farscape episode ever, by the way), when an idea struck me. Be forewarned that I do not know the hows, whens, wheres, or whys for the idea, but it does make some things make sense.

Crais is really Velorek.

OK, when you're done laughing, check this out. In DMD, it was revealed that Crais had this mysterious chip that would make Aeryn very happy. People have even speculated that the chip contains the whereabouts of Velorek, but that was quickly shot down because Crais wouldn't care about Velorek, nor would he think that Velorek's return would make Aeryn happy (because Aeryn belongs with CRAIS, everyone knows that! ;). However, people presenting the Velorek-on-chip theory never presented it through the view that Velorek IS Crais, and the chip merely proves it. Since we learned in TWWW that Velorek loved Aeryn, and that Aeryn most likely loved Velorek, then Velorek would assume that Aeryn still loves him. Thus, would Velorek's return make Aeryn happy.

Having Crais be Velorek would also explain how Crais knew so much about what Talyn was doing in MTB. Of course, Crais could've known that anyway, as it was his experiment to begin with.

Anyway, we KNOW that it's possible for someone to take over someone else's mind and body (Crichton, Grunchlk), and I'm not sure it's ever been mentioned that Scorpy was the only one with the technology to do that.

Like I said, I don't know the hows, wheres, whens, and whys, but it makes some things make sense.

from Kalliope:

OK., I know this subject was discussed a few weeks ago, but after watching DMD yesterday I would like to put my own 2 cents into this. What kind of information can be on Crais' chip and why it would make Aeryn the happiest person among them? IMHO it is about her parents. But how it was possible for Crais to obtain information about people completely strange to him? Let's think... maybe he knew one of those people, somewhere in the past, at the time of happy childhood before being taken to be trained as a PK... Father? No, I don't think so, especially that Crais probably remembers his father's name and it certainly isn't Talyn. So, mother. Yes, I really think that Crais' mother is also Aeryn's mother. But how? Suppose that some time after boys were taken by the PKs, Crais' father died. In Crais' memory flashes in HM in the Aurora chair we see Crais' father and it's not a young man, but rather middle age/older man, so it's possible that he could suffer a kind of a disease like in Shipscat fic "The patter of little feet" and be a victim of it. His mother not wanting to live alone could decide to join PKs to be closer her sons. She met Talyn, fell in love with him and... Aeryn was born. So in this case Crais would be Aeryn's step-brother. How do you like my theory?

from aeryncrichton:

This is strictly speculation on two topics: Aeryn and Crais' past relationship, and the information Crais and Talyn have that would, in Crais' words, make Aeryn "the happiest soul among us." I haven't been to Karlsweb or any other spoiler sites. I haven't read anyone's "spoiler" posts. This is just my own twisted imagination based on what we've seen in episodes up to DMD (since there's been NO interaction between Aeryn and Crais in Season 3 so far), the "Undressed" special, and one comment from Lani Tupu in an interview.

There are no Season 3 spoilers here unless I happen to be right, which would probably take a miracle....My track record on details on Farscape isn't very good!

Okay, let's tackle the past relationship between Aeryn and Crais first. Until recently, I would have said that there wasn't anything between them in the past besides a Commanding Officer/Subordinate relationship, particularly given that in "The Hidden Memory" when she finds him in the Aurora Chair, he doesn't recognize her voice and what she uses to jog his memory is the fact that she'd been declared "irreversibly contaminated." She seemed bitter only about having been thrust out of her previous life, even though she'd since decided she wanted no part of it.

Since "Liars, Guns and Money Pt. 3" and the "Undressed" special, however, I'm wondering if there might have been more to it. The "Undressed" special was scripted to call attention to Aeryn's history with Crais; Claudia mentioned a relationship between Aeryn and Crais, and Ben leaped in with, "No! She doesn't have a RELATIONSHIP with Crais, she has a RELATIONSHIP with Crichton!" For my money, that's a hint that we're going to discover there's more to it than we have been told.

I can't begin to imagine they could have been lovers. I think the only person in her past that Aeryn might ever have considered a lover was Velorek, and she's awkward attaching that term even to him. However, I think it's possible she was Crais' mistress (or whatever it was that Chiana was posing as being for Crichton in "Nerve"). In "The Way We Weren't," Crais definitely seems to notice her at the end after she's betrayed Velorek, and if she thought it would advance her career, I don't imagine she would have resisted (especially if she thought it would HURT her career to resist -- and Crais knew her weakness -- Prowler duty....).

If so, was the relationship still on-going when she met Crichton and was declared irreversibly contaminated? Was that Crais' way of terminating the affair? Had SHE tired of it and backed out, and he chose to take some revenge by getting rid of her that way? It would seem that she might have mentioned it to those on Moya at the time if that was the case -- she was fairly chatty (all things considered) about how upset she was about losing her previous life, and they were all new to each other, they spent some time getting to know each other even if they didn't blab everything. Since Crais was chasing them (okay, chasing Crichton), it might even have been construed as relevant information..... And in TWWW, she swears she would have told the crew about having had a hand in killing Moya's previous Pilot if she'd know it was THAT Leviathan. So, it SEEMS like something that might have come up early on if it were the case. And it didn't.

On the other hand, in LG&M3, when she offers herself to Crais to save Crichton, she certainly seems to think he'd be interested. And to my ear, there's a kind of unspoken "This time" on the end when she tells him, "You can take what you want. I won't stop you." This might indicate she'd broken off a relationship, or that she'd refused to start one. Or it might just mean I have an overactive imagination. Maybe she just figures he's been alone long enough to want some sex, and it's the one thing she can think of to offer him. On the other hand, considering the casual Peacekeeper attitude towards "recreating," Crais' deduction that "Crichton must mean a great deal to you," seems odd unless he had reason to believe she really had no interest in "recreating" with HIM in particular.

So, I guess what I'm speculating here is that we may well find out there's been a sexual relationship between the two of them in the past (though I'd really rather that wasn't the case). I suppose it's also possible that there is an actual genetic relationship between them (there was lots of speculation around the time of DMD that they might be siblings, father/daughter, etc.), but I think that's less likely. And maybe it's just what I'd been thinking all along -- a Commanding Officer/subordinate relationship.

How's that for wishy-washy speculation?

Now, on to the information Crais and Talyn have.....

All we know is that they have found some sort of information on a data chip, which Crais thinks would be very important to Aeryn. Here's where my speculation based on a comment by Lani Tupu comes in. Lani said that when they were working on this scene, he was frantic to know what the information was, so he could have a better idea how to play it. He tracked down Kemper, and asked, "What's on the chip?" The answer was, "We don't know. Don't worry about it, we're working on it."

This immediately brought to mind George Lucas' original first draft of the script of "Return of the Jedi." At the end, where Luke has been resisting and resisting and resisting using the Dark Side and fighting Vader ("I will not fight you, Father."), and he's cowering under the floor in the Emperor's throne room, trying to resist Vader's mental probes, the original script said, "Then Vader says something that really sets Luke off." Of course, that ends up being the threat to his sister, and Luke snaps and begins to fight relentlessly, drawing on the Dark Side as well....a key turning point in the Luke/Vader/Palpatine section of the movie.

What that says to me is, this information that Crais has isn't the important thing -- the important thing is the ACTION or REACTION that follows from it. It might be Aeryn's action -- She might for some reason because of this choose to spend some time with Crais on Talyn, or she might have to tell Crichton or the others some more history, or she might laugh in his face because he's so wrong. It might be Crais -- we might learn more about him because he's so completely misjudged Aeryn (if indeed he has). It might have more to do with Talyn wanting Aeryn on board. I'm sure that TPTB will make the information something interesting, and something that will indeed motivate the desired action/reaction/result, but I suspect that in and of itself, it's not that big a deal....

So, there you have it -- probably wasn't worth wading through all this, was it? Well, feel free to shoot down any and all of the above.....

from Kalliope:

Another theory on the Crais' chip came into my mind. Well, let's say that it's another version of my previous theory (I don't remember the number of my post now, but you can find this theory at http://www.mivonks.com/farscape/25.html - thanks, 30d!!!). I still think that Crais and Aeryn share a mother. But the past events might have been slightly different than I suggested previously. Crais' family lived on the farm somewhere in the Uncharted Territories, that's right. But the fact that you are living on the farm does not necessarily mean that you are a farmer. It is possible that Crais' mother who in fact was a PK soldier was allowed to live on the farm with the man who was Bialar's and Tauvo's father (but not necessarily her husband) and raise her sons because someone related to her (father, brother?) was in a PK High Command. Things changed when he was killed in the battle. She wasn't protected any more and PKs came to take her sons and soon after she was re-assigned. In the meantime Crais' father suffered a kind of disease and died. Several cycles later she met Talyn, fell in love with him and Aeryn was born.

Or... the woman whom Crais' considered to be his mother and who was his father's wife actually wasn't his real mother. Suppose that his real mother was a PK soldier who accidentally got pregnant. She decided to bear a child but didn't want to change her life and asked Crais' father to take their son. Crais' father got married, soon after Tauvo was born and all of them lived on the farm as a happy family. Not very long because as we know boys were taken by PKs. Suppose that during his travels on Talyn in the Uncharted Territories Crais found his old home, met his father and was told this story. But his father didn't know about his mother's fate...

So... suppose another meeting. As Talyn is the first armed Leviathan it is possible that his name is already famous among the PKs and in the whole Uncharted Territories. If Aeryn's father is still alive it is possible that he wanted to know who named this Leviathan after him and managed to meet Crais. During this meeting he might have told Crais that Aeryn wasn't her mother's only child, that she earlier had a son who was raised by his father on the farm somewhere in the Uncharted Territories...

OK, what do you think about it?
